Do You Need a Car in Taormina? The Honest Answer

Updated October 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Cars following a winding road between green Sicilian hills

The short answer: no car for Taormina itself; consider one for several independent day trips through eastern Sicily. The historic centre is compact, Corso Umberto is pedestrian territory, and a vehicle spends most of a town day in a paid car park. The cable car links the centre with Mazzarò, while buses and trains cover the useful coastal journeys. If you plan Etna, Alcantara and inland villages on separate days, however, a car replaces several timetables with one flexible base. Compare cars for Taormina only after deciding where you will park overnight.

When the answer is no

A short stay centred on the Ancient Theatre, Corso Umberto, Isola Bella and a boat departure from Giardini Naxos does not justify a car. Taormina’s slopes are the real transport issue: walking distances look short on a map but include stairs and steep streets. The cable car removes the largest climb between Mazzarò and town, and a taxi can solve an awkward hotel arrival without creating a parking problem for the rest of the stay.

For an airport transfer, compare the through coach with the combination of train and local connection. Timetables change, so use the operator’s page for the travel date rather than copying an old departure time. A couple without a driving licence loses little on a town-and-beach break. A cruise day visitor loses even more time by collecting a car for only a few hours.

When a rental starts to make sense

A car becomes useful when the itinerary, not merely the holiday, needs it. Alcantara’s separate entrances, wineries on Etna’s slopes and small villages are awkward to join in one day by public transport. It also helps a family carrying a pushchair and beach equipment, provided the child-seat request and boot size are confirmed before collection. It is less convincing for a single organised Etna excursion: pickup, mountain transport and a guide can be worth more than the freedom to drive only as far as the visitor area.

Stay for four or five nights with two or more independent rural days and the calculation often shifts towards hiring. Stay for two nights and spend one on Taormina’s coast, and parking plus collection time usually shifts it back.

Parking is part of the decision

Do not aim the satnav at Corso Umberto. The municipality lists Porta Catania, Lumbi, Porta Pasquale and Mazzarò as the principal car parks; Lumbi has a shuttle towards Porta Messina, while Mazzarò suits the coast and cable car. Access restrictions can change with season, events and crowding. Read the signs on the day and ask accommodation to confirm the current route.

The A18 is a toll motorway. Add the hotel’s parking charge, fuel and tolls to the displayed rental price.

My recommendation

For a first visit built around Taormina, Isola Bella and one guided excursion, stay car-free. For a longer eastern-Sicily itinerary with at least two self-driven country days, hire a compact car and reserve parking first.
