Hiring a Car in Taormina: What Do Excess, Deposit and CDW Mean?
Updated October 9, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer: compare the total liability and collection conditions, not only the daily rate. Before paying, open the supplier conditions and find the damage excess, theft excess, security deposit, accepted card type, fuel policy and every fee for an additional or younger driver. CDW limits liability under stated conditions; it does not automatically mean that every kind of damage is covered. Compare Taormina car-hire conditions, then save the conditions for the exact offer you select.
Excess and deposit are different
The excess is the amount up to which the renter may remain liable after covered damage. The deposit is the amount the rental company authorises or blocks on a payment card for potential costs. They may influence one another, but they are not interchangeable. A low-looking excess does not tell you how much card capacity collection requires, and a deposit is not necessarily a charge.
Check both damage and theft wording. Also read the exclusions: tyres, glass, underbody, roof, keys, towing or misfuelling may be treated separately. The decisive text is the supplier’s rental agreement, not a general label on the comparison page.
What CDW does – and does not say
CDW means collision damage waiver. In European rentals it commonly reduces what the company may claim for covered body damage, subject to the agreement. The letters alone do not promise zero excess or “full insurance”. If a broker sells separate reimbursement protection, the desk may still block a deposit and the rental company may first charge an eligible amount; reimbursement is then a separate claim under the broker policy.
That difference explains why a desk agent may offer another product even when protection was bought online. Ask what changes in writing: the excess, deposit, exclusions and breakdown assistance. If the answer is only “more cover”, it is not precise enough.
The card can decide whether you receive the car
Many suppliers require a credit card in the main driver’s name, although rules vary by offer. The card may need sufficient available credit, a PIN and an expiry date beyond the rental. A debit card used to prepay does not prove that the desk will accept it for the deposit.
Match the booking name, driving licence and cardholder exactly. Drivers from outside the EU should verify the licence and International Driving Permit requirements that apply to their licence country. Never infer an age threshold from another company: minimum age, licence-held period and young-driver surcharge are supplier-specific.
Fuel and extras that change the bill
Full-to-full is easy to audit: record the gauge at collection and return the car at the agreed level, keeping the final fuel receipt. Confirm whether unlimited mileage, an additional driver, child seat, airport collection, one-way return and late arrival are included.
Photograph every side, wheels, glass, fuel gauge and mileage before leaving, and have unrecorded damage added to the checkout report.
My recommendation
Choose the offer whose supplier conditions you can actually meet at the desk, even if another headline rate is lower. Buy extra protection only when its written change to excess and exclusions is clear.
